Much of the delight in travelling through Ireland is the varying and interesting villages and towns…some laid out in 18th century idealism, more randomly expanding higgledy pigheadedly over hill and plain. This is certainly true of Sligo in an unspoilt and authentic way. Sligo Town itself still holds the old routes to ford and river…albeit transformed from two and three story houses and shops to ever higher icons of the success of our times. Still you will find quaint lanes, old names and local people making their way through passages made special by the ghosts of their forefathers.
In the many county towns and villages times past are also reflected. Here you will spot an old mill-wheel, there the remnant of the disused local creamery. Perhaps the gable of a once proud Victorian
merchant family can be discerned behind ivy or poster. The town squares are still surrounded by flourishing business but in contrast to times past the local markets and cattle fairs no longer feature. That said however local Farmers Markets are now to be found and artisan foods/organic produce and local specialities may make for a perfect picnic.
Other commercial and public buildings are obvious. Merchant banks, Carnegie libraries, proud places of worship in all denominations reflect Irelands last great building boom in the 1880’s and ‘90s. These expressions of past wealth are now wonderful expressions of their time and all well worth calling into…you will find Sligo people proud of their past and delighted to show you spontaneously around.
Take time in our city, towns and villages and experience real Ireland.
